India's capital Rises to Hazardous Haze Post Diwali
As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "severe" level.
Record-Breaking Pollution Levels
Several parts of the city showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents 10x the safe threshold established by the global health authority.
Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1800, representing fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy limits.
Firecracker Restrictions and New Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous haze that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather begins.
However recently, the recently formed city administration appealed to the supreme court to propose a easing of the prohibition.

In these regions, farmers illegally burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing toxic smog that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air sets in.
Health and Financial Consequences
The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the capital region is substantial, according to multiple investigations.
The contaminated air results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can result in cancer.
Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for ten thousand premature mortalities per year in Delhi.
