British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
