Similar to Storm Claudia swept through the north-west the night before, City overwhelmed Manchester United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a emphatic three-nil triumph for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.

Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United

This result signalled back-to-back league losses for the United manager's side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them seven points off the top team with their championship aspirations severely dented.

Manchester United's capability to balance domestic and European soccer with a small squad has been a hotly discussed subject since they qualified for the Champions League. Reviewing the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would seriously challenge this capability. Regrettably for the away side, they looked fatigued throughout, the memorable win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a a few adjustments. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought energy, although the dropping of the high-performing Malard to the bench was questioned.

Goals Galore

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was headed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's seventh goal from a cross of the season.

They added to their cushion with two more goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was able to advance through the middle from the back, the pitch widened for City. After the Break

The clearest change came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the match. Former City player Park came nearest, hitting the post, but the away team were lacking in ideas and failed to produce a solitary shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have extended their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to defeat any opponent who finished above them last season, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a commanding position after nine games.
